Manjung is set to embark on a new phase of urban rejuvenation as Vale, a global leader in sustainable mining, and Majlis Perbandaran Manjung (MPM) formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) valued up to RM8 million to transform key public spaces across the district over the next five years.
As part of the agreement, the organisations will jointly deliver placemaking initiatives to revitalise community spaces, celebrate Manjung’s unique heritage and strengthen the district’s position as a vibrant, liveable urban centre with compelling heritage and ecotourism appeal. The partnership will focus on four strategic locations, Manjung Lama, Beruas, Teluk Batik and MPM Stadium, with initiatives tailored to each site’s unique character and potential.
Manjung Lama will be revitalised to celebrate its culinary and cultural heritage, while Beruas will be enhanced as a heritage tourism destination by preserving its historical significance and improving visitor experiences. Teluk Batik will be developed to support sustainable ecotourism, while MPM Stadium will become a hub for active lifestyles through initiatives such as the creation of Laman SDG, a public space that promotes awareness of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourages sustainable community practices.
YB Puan Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, Perak State Housing and Local Government Committee Chairman, who graced the MoU signing ceremony, said: “Urban rejuvenation is most meaningful when it reflects community aspirations while preserving the unique identity of a place. This partnership demonstrates how public-private collaboration can help build more resilient, liveable communities while strengthening Perak’s tourism offering, in line with the aspirations of Perak Sejahtera 2030. We look forward to seeing these initiatives generate long-term social and economic value for the rakyat while further strengthening Manjung as a model for community-centred development.”
Mr. Edwin Gerard, Chief Executive Officer of Vale in Malaysia, said, “This MoU marks another important milestone in our partnership with MPM and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating shared value for the communities of Manjung. Through urban rejuvenation and placemaking initiatives, we are bringing to life public spaces that celebrate local heritage, foster community wellbeing and strengthen Manjung’s appeal as a destination for tourism and recreation. Guided by our Community Development Plan (CDP), we will build on this partnership with MPM to deliver lasting social impact and contribute towards a more resilient, vibrant and prosperous Manjung.”
YBrs. Tuan Muhammad Faizal Shah Safian Suri, Yang Dipertua Majlis Perbandaran Manjung, said: “Our collaboration with Vale has helped transform public spaces into vibrant community destinations that celebrate Manjung’s heritage while enhancing the quality of life for residents. Building on the achievements of the previous phase, this partnership will further strengthen our public spaces, enhance tourism offerings and create more inclusive environments where communities can gather, connect and thrive. These efforts will also drive local economic growth through increased visitor activity, tourism opportunities and positive spillover effects for the wider community.”
The MoU is one of the key initiatives under Vale’s broader Community Development Plan (CDP) 3.0, a five-year framework valued at approximately RM20 million. The plan is designed to promote inclusive growth, strengthen community resilience and enhance local livelihoods through sustainable development initiatives spanning education, biodiversity and conservation, urban rejuvenation and community empowerment across Perak and Manjung.
The renewed collaboration builds on the success of CDP 2.0 projects, which revitalised public spaces in Beruas, Manjung Lama and Teluk Batik through heritage-inspired murals, a landmark sculpture and upgraded facilities. These initiatives have been instrumental in strengthening the district’s tourism appeal, supporting local businesses and earning national recognition, including the Sapphire Award for Back Lanes and Side Alleys at the Malaysia Places Awards 2025. The projects were officially handed over by Vale to MPM during the MoU signing ceremony.
The urban revitalisation initiatives outlined under the MoU will be implemented through a phased rollout, with a focus on enhancing public spaces, preserving local identity, strengthening community engagement and supporting sustainable economic growth across Manjung.
