The United Nations has designated September 20 as World Clean Up Day, aiming to raise global awareness about public cleanliness. In support of this initiative, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) organized a Mega Clean-Up Program for World Clean Up Day 2024, which included large-scale community efforts like cleaning public spaces, tree pruning, drain clearing, and recycling campaigns. The event, held at Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh, was attended by key city officials, including the Mayor of Ipoh.
MBI’s efforts have led to notable achievements in environmental sustainability. Between 2023 and 2024, MBI collected 417.6 tons of used cooking oil, resulting in a reduction of 7.202 tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, from 2021 to 2024, the council collected 323.72 tons of e-waste, contributing to a reduction of 281.63 tons of CO2 emissions. MBI also launched two Automatic Drive-Thru Recycling Centers (ADTReC) for the Trash4Cash recycling initiative, the first in March 2023 and the second in April 2024, to encourage more community participation in recycling.
The 3R Trash4Cash program saw significant involvement from residents, with 94,979.09 kg of recyclable materials collected door-to-door and 8,570.75 kg at the ADTReC centers. These efforts led to a reduction of 283,973.16 kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
The primary goal of these initiatives is to maximize community, industry, commercial, and institutional involvement in recycling. MBI encourages other corporate entities to join in supporting these sustainability programs. The council remains committed to enhancing city cleanliness and achieving its “Smart and Green City” vision by 2030, with the long-term goal of fostering a culture of recycling and environmental awareness across all levels of society.
