KMC Medical Centre is set to mark a major healthcare milestone with Perak’s first robotic-assisted surgery, using the Edge Medical MP1000 Surgical Robotic System.
The procedure, scheduled for Friday, Aug 28, is being carried out in partnership with QURUS by Dr G, a Malaysian surgical group led by consultant bariatric and robotic surgeon Dr Gafor Mubarak.
The partnership combines KMC Medical Centre’s hospital facilities with QURUS’ expertise in robotic and metabolic surgery, with the aim of making advanced surgical care more accessible to patients in Perak and Northern Malaysia.
The Edge Medical MP1000 provides surgeons with a magnified 3D, high-definition view of the surgical area and wristed instruments designed for precise movements and improved control.
The surgeon remains fully in control throughout the procedure. The robotic system does not operate independently but translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise movements of the surgical instruments.
For suitable procedures, robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery may offer potential benefits such as smaller incisions, less blood loss, reduced postoperative discomfort, smaller scars and shorter hospital stays, although outcomes vary depending on the procedure and individual patient.
QURUS by Dr G brings experience in bariatric, metabolic and minimally invasive surgery. According to the press release, Dr G has performed more than 2,100 procedures since 2023, with a reported complication rate of 0.38%.
The group has also developed initiatives including a Diploma in Bariatric Surgery with Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), a post-operative patient application and a network of specialist clinics.
While QURUS is known for bariatric, metabolic and hernia surgery, the partnership is expected to expand into general gastrointestinal, colorectal, hepatobiliary, upper GI and complex revisional surgery, with potential future services in urology, gynaecology and thoracic surgery.
New services will be introduced progressively, supported by surgeon training, proctoring and careful patient selection.
With the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery, KMC Medical Centre and QURUS by Dr G aim to strengthen Perak’s healthcare capabilities and bring advanced surgical care closer to patients in Perak, Northern Malaysia and neighbouring regions.
