The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has unveiled the recipients of the prestigious 2024 Scroll of Honour Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to sustainable urbanization and fostering a better quality of life in cities worldwide (Source: UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award Winners).
This year, UN-Habitat received a record-breaking 127 nominations spanning across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. The five chosen winners represent the pinnacle of best practices and innovative approaches that directly contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
For over three decades, the Scroll of Honour Award has recognized 192 impactful initiatives by individuals and organizations across the globe. The esteemed winners will be formally presented with the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award – a plaque engraved with their name – during the global celebration of World Habitat Day in Querétaro City, Mexico, on October 7th, 2024.
This year’s World Habitat Day theme, “Engaging youth to create a better urban future,” highlights the critical role of younger generations in shaping the present and future of our cities through active participation, local leadership opportunities, and inclusive planning processes.
The 2024 Scroll of Honour Award Winners:
- Ville de Rabat, Morocco: Recognized for its groundbreaking approach to integrated and sustainable urban development, exemplified by its “Rabat a Sustainable and Inclusive City” vision.
- Alcaldía de Santiago de Cali, Colombia: Applauded for tackling urban and housing challenges through transformative efforts in public spaces, legalizing informal settlements, and promoting sustainable development.
- Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, Malaysia: Awarded for its transition from a resource-intensive economy to a regenerative model focused on health, waste management, and ecotourism, all while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Allen Kong, Australia: Celebrated for his pioneering work in socially and environmentally sustainable architecture, mentorship, and leadership in inclusive design advocacy through global programs and indigenous community support.
- David Satterthwaite, United Kingdom: Recognized for his revolutionary contributions to urban development through advocating for improved housing and living conditions for marginalized urban residents.
