The occurrence of road cracks and potholes on Jalan Kamaruddin Isa, near the site of culvert upgrading works by Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh (MBI), has raised concerns among road users. This incident was caused by the erosion of the embankment near the newly constructed culvert structure, which was completed in early August 2024 using the jacking method.
According to MBI’s investigation, the embankment erosion occurred due to excavation work carried out by the contractor to construct the inlet structure at the entrance of the culvert. This excavation led to the destabilization of the embankment, which subsequently caused cracks and potholes to form on the road surface.
As an immediate measure, embankment reinforcement work has begun this afternoon using sandbag installations. Additionally, the cracks and potholes on the road surface have been filled with crushed stone material to prevent further serious collapses.
MBI also anticipates that the inlet structure construction will be completed within a week. Furthermore, U-drain installation work is required to connect the existing inlet to the culvert’s entrance. The overall culvert upgrading project is expected to be fully completed by mid-September 2024.
In this regard, MBI urges road users to adhere to the safety signage in the area for the convenience and safety of everyone. The public’s patience during this temporary disruption is greatly appreciated to ensure better infrastructure for the future.
