The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has launched its 2024 Anti-Rat Infestation Campaign, targeting the city’s main public market, Pasar Besar Ipoh. This initiative aims to eradicate rat populations and prevent the spread of diseases they carry, like leptospirosis.
The campaign comes amid rising concerns about rat infestations, particularly in the market. Poor waste management practices and unhygienic conditions have been identified as major contributing factors.
To combat this issue, MBI will be implementing a multi-pronged approach. This includes the installation of rat traps throughout the market, along with educational programs for traders on proper waste disposal techniques. Additionally, MBI will be conducting regular monitoring of the rat population to assess the campaign’s effectiveness.
MBI is urging cooperation from both traders and the general public. Traders are encouraged to utilize the provided rat traps and maintain clean and sanitary conditions around their stalls. The public is also advised to be vigilant and report any sightings of rats to the authorities.
The campaign has already shown some initial success. By June 2024, the rat index at Pasar Besar Ipoh had decreased from 3 (high) to 2 (moderate). MBI aims to further reduce the population to an index of 1 or lower.
This initiative aligns with MBI’s ongoing efforts to make Ipoh the Cleanest City. The Anti-Rat Infestation Campaign not only tackles public health concerns but also contributes to a more pleasant and hygienic market environment for both traders and customers.
The success of this campaign hinges on a collaborative effort. By working together, MBI, traders, and the public can create a cleaner and healthier Ipoh for everyone.
