Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi, Malaysia’s first-ever 5-star resort, celebrates its 35th anniversary this month, reflecting on its role in shaping Langkawi’s tourism industry and unveiling plans for further development. Opened in 1989 during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the resort has become a significant part of Langkawi’s story as an internationally renowned destination.
Over the decades, Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa has evolved while staying true to its inspiration—a traditional Malay village. Its location on the shores of Pantai Cenang, paired with thoughtful design and guest-focused amenities, has helped it remain a favoured destination for both domestic and international travellers. To mark its anniversary, the resort unveiled its newly upgraded Horizon Pool, featuring a sprawling 1,489 sqm adult pool, a 311 sqm kid’s pool, and an expansive 4,140 sqm pool deck.
“This 35th anniversary is a proud moment for all of us,” said Neoh Kean Boon, General Manager of the resort. “It’s a chance to reflect on how far the property has come, while embracing continuous innovation and improvement to make every guest’s stay even more special, all while staying true to the spirit of the destination. “
From its architecture to its service philosophy, Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa reflects Langkawi’s heritage. Its chalets are designed to resemble the traditional kampung houses of Malaysia, complemented by modern updates that ensure comfort for today’s travellers. The resort has continually upgraded its facilities to align with changing guest needs, most recently through its “Pelangi Reimagined” initiative, which introduced refurbished rooms and enhanced amenities.
The resort’s dining offerings, recreational activities, and proximity to Langkawi’s attractions further contribute to its appeal. However, its upcoming MICE facilities signal an even broader vision for the future. Designed to host events ranging from business meetings to large-scale conventions, these developments underscore Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa’s role in supporting Langkawi’s position as a hub for international events and tourism.
