Egypt defeated South Africa for the second time and this time for the 5th spot in the tournament in the the 5th and 6th playoff match in the 29th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2022 International Men’s hockey tournament at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium, Ipoh, this evening.
In their earlier round robin encounter, Egypt had defeated South Africa 3-0, but this time around, the latter made it more difficult and it was South Africa who took the lead.
Both teams had a relatively young and inexperienced side and it was exposure they were looking at in this tournament.
South Africa took the lead through their first penalty corner in the 6th minute when Connor Beauchamp scored.
However, Egypt hit back in the 29th minute to draw level through a penalty corner taken by Adel Ziad Baioumy Ibrahim.
It was a close battle and just when the match looked like heading for a draw, Egypt’s Ragab Ismail Abdalla Hossameldin scored off a field goal in the 44th minute.
South Africa tried hard to get back into the game in the final quarter, but Egypt coached by their Pakistan’s former Olympian, Zaman Tahir, held on to slim lead to emerge 5th in the tournament while South Africa return as wooden spoonist.
