After a hiatus of 14 years, the Rotary Ekiden Run made a triumphant return to Ipoh, drawing runners of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate teamwork, endurance, and community spirit.
Originating in Japan, the Ekiden Run is a relay race that emphasizes camaraderie as much as competition. Each team consists of five runners, with every participant covering two kilometers, combining for a total distance of 10 kilometers.
This year’s event was jointly organized by the Rotary Clubs in Perak and the Perak Tourism Association. The revival proved to be a success, attracting 31 teams and 155 participants. Runners came from diverse sectors, including government agencies, private organizations, NGOs, Rotary Clubs, and the general public.
The youngest participant was just 18 years old, while the oldest competitor, at 82, demonstrated that age is no barrier to community engagement and athletic spirit. The event also welcomed participants with special needs, including those on wheelchairs and scooters, who inspired fellow runners and spectators alike.
District 3300 Governor Edward Khoo attended as Guest of Honor, while the Organizing Chair was Past President Francis Vijeyaselvan, District 3300 Area Coordinator for the Perak Rotary Clubs and a member of the Rotary Club of Greentown.
Every participant received a finisher’s medal and a certificate of completion, but the true reward was the atmosphere of encouragement and unity. Team members were seen motivating one another, embodying the essence of friendship and camaraderie that the Ekiden Run represents.
The return of the Rotary Ekiden Run underscored Rotary’s mission of bringing people together from all walks of life, united for good.
