Nurturing Mental Health in the Firefighting Community

The Self-Care Mental Wellness Workshop, organized by Rotary District 3300, Rotary Club of Greentown, and Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB), took place on May 15, 2024, at the Training Hall of the Perak Fire Department. This event aimed to enhance mental wellness, particularly for individuals in high-stress professions like firefighting.

Mr. Uithayakumar, the Past President of the Greentown Rotary Club, delivered an address highlighting the importance of mental wellness and the role of community support in maintaining mental health. Following this,PPjB Jamri Bin Masran, the Deputy Director of the Perak Fire Department gave a speech, emphasizing the significance of mental health for firefighters and the department’s commitment to supporting their well-being.

Dr. Johnny Chaw then discussed common signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and anxiety disorders. His talk provided crucial insights into recognizing these symptoms early and understanding the importance of seeking professional help.

Afterward, Ms. Nur Hafizah Zainudin, an occupational therapist, introduced several relaxation techniques designed to reduce stress and improve overall mental well-being, offering practical tools that participants can incorporate into their daily routines.

Dr. Anita concluded the series of talks with a focus on the psychological impact experienced by firefighters and rescuers. She highlighted potential anxiety symptoms specific to their line of work and emphasized the importance of early recognition and intervention. Her session aimed to foster a better understanding of the mental health challenges faced by firefighters and promote mental resilience within the profession.

The workshop ended with an interactive Q&A session, allowing participants to seek further clarification on the topics discussed. Certificates were presented to all attendees, marking the successful completion of the workshop. Overall, the Self-Care Mental Wellness Workshop was a significant step toward enhancing mental health awareness and self-care practices among firefighters.
