Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin @ Md Daud, Mayor of Ipoh, officiated the opening of Feng Cha TLF Sdn Bhd at No. 21, Pusat Perdagangan Canning II, Ipoh.
The Ipoh City Council (MBI) conducts regular inspections and grading of licensed food premises to ensure hygiene and safety. In 2024, out of 3,200 licensed premises, 982 achieved Grade A certification, representing 30% of all premises. MBI aims to increase this figure to 50% by 2025, focusing on raising standards to boost the gastronomic economy in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Ipoh has earned recognition as one of Asia’s top travel destinations for 2025, ranking 5th in Time Out’s list of 8 best cities to visit. Tourists are drawn to its heritage buildings, limestone caves, and reputation for exceptional food and coffee, making it a culinary and cultural hotspot.
Grade A certification, valid for two years, assesses food premises based on cleanliness, BMW-standard toilets (Clean, Inviting, and Fragrant), proper food handler vaccinations, installation of grease traps, and pest control measures. Businesses must meet these criteria to renew their licenses. In 2024, 1,689 food premise toilets were inspected, with 1,670 receiving four-star ratings or higher. However, 19 premises received three stars and faced penalties, including fines and non-renewal of licenses, until improvements were made.
The enforcement of strict hygiene standards ensures food safety, enhances Ipoh’s culinary reputation, and aligns with its ambition to become Malaysia’s premier tourism city by 2025. The recognition also supports local businesses by attracting more tourists and boosting the local economy.
