The unmistakable roar of vintage engines and the sparkle of polished chrome set the scene at the Royal Ipoh Club (RIC) this weekend, as more than 60 classic and vintage cars rolled in for the Merdeka Gala Classic Gathering — a celebration that blended Malaysia’s independence spirit with the enduring allure of motoring heritage.
Jointly organised by the Royal Ipoh Club and the Perak Classic Drivers (PCD), the event drew enthusiasts from Perak and Kuala Lumpur, united by a shared passion for preserving and appreciating classic cars.
Founded in 2018, PCD has grown to over 160 members. More than just a club, it serves as a community where enthusiasts exchange restoration knowledge, assist one another with automotive issues, and guide members through legal matters such as road tax exemptions for vintage vehicles.
Speaking at the gathering, PCD representatives underscored the club’s mission to safeguard Malaysia’s motoring heritage. “Classic cars are more than just vehicles. They carry stories, craftsmanship, and memories that deserve to be protected for future generations,” one member said.
Mr. JP Hari Krishnan, President of the Royal Ipoh Club, warmly welcomed participants and expressed his gratitude to PCD for choosing the club as the venue. He remarked that collaborations such as this not only honour heritage but also strengthen bonds within the community.
The day’s programme was steered by KT Pillai, Ipoh’s celebrated Master of Ceremonies, whose charisma and lively commentary kept spirits high throughout.
Held in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th Merdeka anniversary, the event highlighted three compelling reasons to restore classic cars: preserving automotive history, enhancing investment value, and the pride of owning and driving a piece of rolling heritage.
On display were Austins, Mercedes-Benzes, BMWs, Fiats, Porsches, Volkswagens, Toyota 4WDs, Hondas, and Alfa Romeos — each meticulously restored and gleaming under the Ipoh sun. Visitors admired the craftsmanship, many recalling how these vehicles once dominated the roads decades ago.
Beyond the showcase, attendees enjoyed a vibrant programme featuring speeches, fun quizzes, lucky draws, souvenir presentations, and a group photo session. Complimentary breakfast and lunch, courtesy of the Royal Ipoh Club, further added to the festive atmosphere as members mingled and swapped restoration stories.
The event’s main sponsor, X-1R Asia, also took the stage to present its range of scientifically proven lubricants and fuel treatments. Renowned for supplying motorsports teams and even NASA, X-1R highlighted products such as engine treatments, fuel system cleaners, and octane boosters — technologies designed to keep even the oldest engines running strong.
What sets PCD apart is its inclusivity. Membership is open to men and women alike, with no fees, welcoming anyone who shares a love for vintage cars. The club regularly organises convoys to destinations such as Taiping, Lumut, Kampar, and Cameron Highlands, often with police escorts for ceremonial events.
As engines roared and vintage horns echoed across Ipoh, the Merdeka Gala Classic Gathering proved that classic cars are far more than relics of the past — they are living legacies that continue to inspire pride, unity, and passion in today’s Malaysia.
