Seminar and Workshop on Understanding Dyslexia was a Resounding Success it was held on 15th June 2024, at Brother Liborius Auditorium Hospital Fatimah.

The Rotary Club of Greentown, in collaboration with Hospital Fatimah, Dyslexia Genius, and the Malaysian Medical Association Perak Branch. successfully conducted a Seminar and Workshop on Understanding Dyslexia on 15th June 2024.

The event saw an impressive turnout, with over 80 to 100 participants including teachers, parents, and professionals. There were participants from outstation including Kelantan, Penang and Taiping.

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent reading writing and spelling. It is characterized by difficulties with phonological awareness, verbal memory, and verbal processing speed. Early identification and support are crucial in helping individuals with dyslexia achieve their full potential.

The seminar that was held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, was highly interactive, featuring Dr Jaldeen Mohd Ali, an Educational Psycjologist from Dyslexia Genius, speaking on Dyslexia.

Followed by Dr.Shan Narayanan, Resident Paediatrician, Hospital Fatimah, sharing Sarah’s ( not real name) Journey: Navigating Dyslexia and the Clinical challenges.

Dr.Jaldeen shared invaluable insights into the identification and support of children with dyslexia.

Dr.Shan highlighted, Sarah’s Journey emphasised that individuals with dyslexia are very caring, they try very hard however find it difficult. With early identification and thought in a way they understand brings good outcome.

Sarah after initial management performed well and is now a solicitor.

In the afternoon, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, two concurrent workshops were conducted—one for teachers and one for parents.

The workshop was conducted by Dr Bulan Ayu who is a dyslexic herself. Dr.Bulan did a thesis on Educational Experiences by Dyslexic Students.

The 2nd trainer was Cik Nur Amirah Abdul Halim, specialist Teacher in Dyslexia. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with honours.

These sessions provided practical strategies and hands-on skills, enabling attendees to better support dyslexic children in both educational and home environments.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the knowledge and skills gained, highlighting the event’s effectiveness in enhancing their understanding of dyslexia.

The organizers are grateful for the enthusiastic participation and look forward to more awareness and acceptance in the community.
