The Mayor of Ipoh, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin@Md Daud, officially launched the Used Cooking Oil Recycling Campaign at Medan Selera Dataran Dato’ Sagor. The event was attended by various dignitaries and representatives from local authorities, strategic economic partners, and the Perak Coffee Shop Keepers Association.
In his speech, the Mayor emphasized the importance of the Circular Economy (C.E), aiming to restore resources to the environment and economy through recycling and waste prevention initiatives. The campaign aligns with Ipoh’s vision to become the Cleanest City in 2023 and a Smart and Low Carbon City by 2030, in line with the country’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The campaign’s objectives include promoting the Waste to Wealth concept to boost the economy and support small businesses involved in recycling activities. It also aims to raise awareness about the proper disposal of used cooking oil and the importance of installing grease traps in food premises to prevent pollution and flash floods.
The program has already introduced a ‘Bazar Ramadhan Mesra Alam’ concept, collaborating with strategic partners to recycle used cooking oil into biofuel at all 22 Ramadan bazaar locations. The goal is to extend this initiative to all restaurants, cafes, and council-owned stalls in the Ipoh City Council area.
However, the inspection revealed that some food premises were not fully compliant with the installation, cleaning, and maintenance of grease traps, leading to foul odors and clogged drains. To address this, fines have been issued to non-compliant premises, and the Mayor advises all food premises owners to adhere to the grease trap installation requirements.
The campaign aims to create awareness among food premises owners about the importance of proper grease trap installation and maintenance. Compliance with these regulations is essential to achieve the vision of making Ipoh a Smart and Prosperous City and a Prosperous Perak by 2030.
