The “Embracing Neurodiversity” seminar, organised by Rotary Club of Greentown in partnership with MMA Perak Branch, and Hospital Fatimah, brought together 110 participants from across Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Sibu in a one-day, power-packed event filled with learning, empathy, and inclusion.

Officiated by YB Jenny Choy ,Deputy Speaker of Perak State Assembly the seminar began with a warm welcome from Dato Sushil Ratti, President of Rotary Club of Greentown acknowledging the unwavering support of members and collaborators.

The spotlight then turned to the keynote speaker, Dr. Zahilah Filzah Zulkifli, whose thought-provoking session, “The Neurodiversity Paradigm: Shifting from Deficit-Based Thinking to Neuro-Affirming Practice”, captivated the audience. Dr. Zahilah’s passionate call for a mind shift—from trying to “fix” neurodivergent individuals to recognising their strengths and affirming their identity— resonated deeply with attendees, earning heartfelt praise and reflection.

Dr. Shan Narayanan followed with an engaging, high-energy session titled “Breaking Barriers: Embracing Neurodiversity to Create Inclusion”, featuring a dynamic panel:

  • Meenashri, a18-year-old autistic self-advocate, joined by her mother, Ms Janet Henry,
  • Dr. Cheah Boon Eu, an ADD, Autistic doctor
  • Ms. Looi Wan Wai, sister to Keen, a neurodivergent individual and proud founder of a KeenKitchen that employs neurodivergent youth.

Together, they shared personal journeys of trials, triumphs, and transformation, which left a lasting impact on the room.

Dr. Farah Ahmad Shahabuddin highlighted how to support diverse attention styles in learners, creating understanding and awareness in educational and parenting settings.

A lively Q & A session was followed by lunch

After Lunch participants also had the opportunity to “walk in the shoes” of neurodivergent individuals during a powerful simulation activity. Coordinated by Occupational Therapist Kua Jee Min and Dr. Shan Narayanan, the session provided eye-opening, hands-on experience on sensory processing challenges.

The final breakout, “Supporting Sensory Needs at Home and in Learning Environments”, allowed for in-depth exploration, guided by Jee Min and a dedicated team of OT consisting of Ms. Khoo Loui Ean, Ms. Annie Yi, Ms Grace and Mr. Sia Jun Bin.

Attendees found the seminar eye-opening, as it inspired a shift toward strength-based thinking, promoted kindness and acceptance of neurodivergent individuals, and provided practical strategies to support them.

The core message of the day was clear:
Neurodiversity is not about fixing people. It’s about understanding different ways of thinking and creating a world where everyone belongs.

The seminar closed with a renewed call for ongoing awareness and inclusive practices in all sectors of society.
