Acting on parents’ feedback for a need for meaningful activities to keep their children occupied, Imperial International School (Imperial) organised an an experiential holiday programme; Lost Valley of Chief Powhatan, from 25-27 July 2022 which was opened to both Imperial students and the general public between the ages of 7 and 15.
“The main objective was to have outdoor activities to stimulate the participants both mentally and physically. This was something parents were very keen on after almost two years of lockdown which severely curtailed children’s’ outdoor activities,” explains Renita Simmunjalam, Imperial’s Marketing and Admissions Manager. “The almost limitless energy displayed by the participants certainly showed they were eager for some outdoor activities as well.”
Held in collaboration with Awesome Tribes, the holiday programme was designed to improve participants’ social and life skills. Team building activities were core to the proceedings as participants were challenged to communicate effectively and build rapport with their respective tribe members.
“Despite having been a trainer for close to two decades, the endless energy and enthusiasm of the children never fails to amaze me. The younger female participants, in particular, were so enthusiastic and full of thoughtfulness for their fellow tribe members,” remarked Chief Darren Suresh, the coach for this event. “Kudos to the organising committee for curating this event which really taught the participants some valuable lessons.”
Renita is keen to highlight that Imperial’s teaching and learning extends beyond classrooms and normal school terms. “We want to ensure students use their holiday time appropriately. The holiday programme which was parked under the ‘You Belong Here campaign’ was an opportunity for them to learn new things in a fun and secure environment. The Lost Valley of Chief Powhaten does precisely that. We are pleased that everyone had a great time.”
My Ipoh had a chance to interview a few of the participants; this is what they had to say:
“It was real fun and a good experience managing younger team mates and I had the opportunity to mingle with them as well as leading them. – Nikithak Kalaiselvan (Year 7)
“Now we know managing people of different ages is not an easy task. It’s a happy and meaningful learning for me. Luckily I decided to come and my friends missed the camp.” – Mourveen Isaac (Year 9)
“Teacher, can we organise more holiday camps like this- maybe one week?” – Siew Qi Bin (Year 6)
“I love coming to school and this camp was first time for me and I want to join more camps in future, – Meera Raaji Rajkumar( Year 1)
” We enjoyed the 3 days camp, wish could have stay in camps next time , but it was wonderful,” – Dhanyaa Saralathan ( Year 4).
Such was the positive response from all involved has spurred Imperial’s administrators to repeat such holiday programme later in the year, with the possibility of a venue outside Imperial’s campus to allow for more activities.
Imperial offers the internationally-recognise Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. For admission enquiries and more information call on 017 6044 968 or email to enquiry@imperial.edu.my.
