Dr. Madhuri Majumder, a renowned dermatologist and humanitarian, has made a name for herself not only as the first woman dermatologist in Malaysia but also as a compassionate individual who has dedicated her life to helping those in need. At the age of 90, she is still actively involved in almost 20 different associations, including serving as the President of the The Perak Society For The Promotion of Mental Health since 1986 and as an active advisor for the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the member of Greentown Rotary Club where she was once the first woman president.
My Ipoh was fortunate enough to get an up-close and personal interview with Dr. Majumder and here are a few things we learned from and about her!
In the 1980s, Dr. Madhuri moved to Ipoh and has decided to reside here ever since. She fell in love with the peaceful environment and welcoming people of this charming town, but as an adventurous woman who loves exploring new cultures and traditions from all over the world, Ipoh still wins her over
“East or West, Ipoh is the best,” she says.
She has dedicated her life to making a change in the lives of the homeless and less fortunate, giving hope to children who once felt hopeless. Every event organized by her has had a tremendous impact on society, leaving a lasting impression on those who have been fortunate enough to be a part of her projects.
A few programs that she organized were:
Raising awareness to sustain a green environment
Dr. Madhuri Majumder, affectionately known as Dato Majumder, has always had a deep love for nature and has made it her mission to preserve the environment. She has organized various activities to promote flora-based community work and has garnered the support of the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yussuff in her efforts. Her tireless dedication to this cause has made a significant impact in the community, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps and do their part in protecting our planet.
Raised campaigns to shine light onto the awareness of mental health
Dato Majumder is a true champion for mental health and has dedicated her life to breaking down the barriers surrounding mental illness. Her contribution to mental health in the country is immeasurable, and she has done incredible work to destigmatize mental illness and help those who are struggling with psychosocial issues.
One of her most significant contributions was the establishment of Luther Clinic, the first of its kind in the country, which provided a safe space and support for those suffering from mental illness. Through her efforts, she helped to raise awareness of mental health and challenged the public’s prejudices towards cured mental patients.
Dato Majumder’s dedication to mental health is evident in her tireless efforts to organize conferences, conventions, and fundraising projects that benefit society. She has always gone above and beyond to support her patients, both emotionally and financially. When patients were unable to afford their mental health treatments, Dato Majumder would readily step in and offer her help.
In early 2021, Dato Majumder combined her love for nature’s flora and her patients by gifting the Perak Mental Society their own garden, Madhuri’s Garden. This beautiful and tranquil space was carefully crafted and nurtured by Dato Majumder herself, and it serves as a sanctuary where patients can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Dato Majumder’s work in mental health has truly made a difference in the lives of many, and she continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration to those around her.
Supporting Schools and Students
Dato Majumder has always been a strong advocate for education and has actively supported students in various ways. She believes that the future of the world lies in the hands of the younger generation and she has made it her mission to help them in any way she can.
In her efforts to guide and mentor young minds, Dato Majumder has been actively involved with the Girl Guides, sharing her own knowledge and wisdom to prepare them for the challenges of the real world. She inspires them to be the change they want to see in the world and encourages them to make a positive impact in their communities.
In addition to her involvement with the Girl Guides, Dato Majumder has also donated generously to support the welfare of poor and needy students at SMK Buntong in 2015. Her contribution has helped to ease the financial burden of these students, allowing them to focus on their studies and pursue their dreams.
Dato Majumder’s dedication to education and her unwavering support for students have left a lasting impact on the community. Her contributions have not only helped to uplift the lives of the students but have also inspired them to strive for excellence and make a positive difference in the world.
Empowered women to realize their potential and worth in their life.
Dato Majumder’s unwavering support for women’s empowerment has always been a driving force in her life. She has consistently organised seminars and conferences that have helped to uplift and inspire women from all walks of life. One such event was the Empowerment of Women Seminar that she organised as President of the Rotary Club in 2006. The seminar was a huge success, and it received recognition from Perak’s state leaders.
Dato Majumder has always been a strong advocate for women helping other women, especially those who are less fortunate. She has always appreciated and recognised women who have given a helping hand to others. In 2018, she set up a scholarship fund for underprivileged women to help them pursue higher education and achieve their dreams. She believes that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and empowering women to reach their full potential.
As the interview came to a end, we asked Dato Majumder to share some words of wisdom with the young generation. She responded with a powerful and timeless message: “Be kind always to everyone around you.” Her words serve as a reminder that small acts of kindness can go a long way in making a difference in someone’s life. It is a message that is especially important in today’s world, where empathy and compassion are needed more than ever. Let us all take her advice to heart and make kindness a part of our daily lives.

Great admiration for her work and passion on women empowerment. On Perak Society, it’s timely to mention that there was a significant support and contribution by Tan Sri Dato Seri Azlaani Dr M Mahadevan (Chief Psychiatrist of Malaysia), playing as instrumental role on Perak Society in particular and in Dato Majumder’s social activism.
